MY STORY

Suzanne Schneider
Owner/Director

Welcome to my site! I’m Suzanne and I am so glad you visited. Since you are here, you are likely concerned about your child or want to learn more about our services. I am a Literacy and Dyslexia Specialist, Academic Tester, Advocate, Tutor, and Parent and Teacher Trainer. I went to Boston University and graduated back in 1993 with an elementary education degree. I immediately went for my Master’s Degree at Hunter College specializing in Learning Disorders. I started my career teaching a small special education class in an East Harlem Public School and then worked as an elementary education teacher at Purchase Elementary School in Westchester County, NY. I have also been the reading specialist, resource room teacher and a special education integrated co-teacher (ICT). I bring the knowledge I learned from my 12+ years teaching in public school to help support families. In addition to working in public education, I have been tutoring and advocating for families since 1993. My passion for working with students who learn differently stems from my own late diagnosis of a learning disability while in high school and from my husband’s heart-wrenching early educational experiences as a child with Dyslexia back in the 80”s.

In addition to my private practice, Westchester Educational Services, which offers tutoring, advocacy and literacy assessments, I am also a literacy consultant to several Westchester public schools. In addition to helping individual children and families, I am now helping to train teachers how to incorporate multi-sensory instruction into all aspects of the curriculum, executive function training, dyslexia awareness, phonological awareness training, structured literacy approaches and the science of reading.

My specialized trainings include, but are not limited to, several Orton Gillingham approaches, Lindamood-Bell and Writing Revolution/Hochman Method for Writing. I have been incorporating these approaches into my instruction for over 25+ years. My passion for supporting families with Dyslexia and other learning differences led me to start the Westchester County, Decoding Dyslexia Family Support group and to take a leadership role with Decoding Dyslexia NY which is a grassroots organization to support families of students with dyslexia for free in NY. I absolutely love the opportunities I have working with students, families, tutors, public school teachers and administrators.

Our Mission

All children can and deserve to learn; it is our job to find the way they learn best. When children don’t learn, it isn’t their fault; it is our job to teach differently. Reading is the key to success. If a child can read, he can teach himself anything.

“Let us help you be your child’s best advocate.”

Hi Suzanne. Thank you for this email! Makes me smile so...!! I wanted to let you know that he received a 50% time accommodation for the ACT’s. Thank you for taking the time to write letters on his behalf and making a difference in this process. He has had such tremendous improvement both academically and socially after all the work and support. He ended up with a 32 on his ACT (97%) and was accepted early decision to his top choice college. He got his glowing report card yesterday- 3 A’s, 2 A- (in his AP courses), and 1 B+. We can’t thank you enough.

We first started working with Suzanne when she screened my daughter for Dyslexia. Suzanne has a very natural ease with kids, she made my daughter feel comfortable and they even had fun throughout the screening! My daughter asked when Suzanne would be coming back to play games! After the screening and gaining so much amazing information from the wealth of knowledge Suzanne has to provide we used her as an advocate for my daughter's CSE meeting where she aided us in getting an IEP and services she so needed. It was a pleasure working with Suzanne from start to finish and we will be continuing our relationship with Suzanne as both our children progress through school.

We are just writing to let you know how amazing our son is doing in fourth grade! He is one of the top readers in the class! We can’t thank you enough for your assistance with screening him for dyslexia and getting him the services he needed. We tried on our own and nothing worked! Bringing you in was the best decision we could have made. You helped the school understand that despite his young age, our family history and our son’s speech and language issues, put him at a serious risk for dyslexia and reading failure. You did not give up and convinced them to provide him with the intensive reading support he needed in first grade. We can’t imagine what would have happened if we waited until second grade which was their recommendation! You changed his path and we are forever grateful.
